Mento has many unique qualities, one of which is its place of birth. Songs like “Linstead Market” and “Chi Chi Bud” show the genre’s ties to the island’s countryside. Lyrics also define the genre. They cover a wide range of topics, from food preparation to relationship issues.

There are two main types of mento: classic and urban. Classic Mento music features acoustic instruments and an informal folk quality. In contrast, Urban Mento music has a slicker, more jazzy feel. Still, song themes are the same.
